RockKeyboards: Robert Moog Part 2
Greetings, readers! Welcome to another edition of Rock Keyboards. Last month we started talkingabout synth pioneer, Robert Moog. We spoke mostly about Moog's early life, education,and some of his important keyboards. This month I wanted to go into a littlemore detail talk about some of Moog's incredible contributions to the world ofsynthesis, and what many thinks is his most important instrument, The Minimoog.
Moogfiles for only one patent
Moog actuallypioneered many of the concepts that are used in synthesis. Pitch and modulationwheels, modular connectivity, envelope generators and voltage control were alldeveloped by the Moog company. It’s interesting to note that the only patentMoog had was for the ladder filter. Many believe that the financial problems ofhis company could have been avoided if Moog obtained patents for all of hisinnovations. On the other hand, the fact that these developments were availablein the public domain helped the synthesizer industry flourish and gave rise tomany other wonderful companies like Roland, Korg, Ensoniq, and many others.
Moog'sgreatest innovation: The Ladder Filter
Moog’spatent actually had a complicated name: electronic high pass and low pass filtersemploying the base to emitter diode resistance of bipolar transistors. The ladderfilter made its debut in the first Moog modular synths used by artists such asWendy Carlos. The amazing invention used transistors to control the filtercutoff point with voltage. When the filter control knob was turned the voltagewould go up and down causing different frequencies to be smoothly cut or added.The filter knob was often used with a resonance knob that would highlight acertain frequency and give even more motion to the sound. The controls could beeasily manipulated in live performance to give expressiveness to lead sounds,basses, and efx. Moog filed for the patent in 1966 and it was received in 1969.Virtually every synth maker copied Moog's innovations. ARP's filters were sosimilar that they were threatened with legal action in 1976.
Minimoog:The most famous synth in history
TheMinimoog was the first synth to be sold in retail stores. It was modeled afterthe much larger and more expensive modular Moog. Many progressive rock and jazzmusicians were drawn to the unusual new instrument and made history with itsnew sound. HerbieHancock, Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, StevieWonder, and many others used the instrument to great effect on their mostfamous recordings. The Minimoog used all of the technology we have talked aboutin the last two articles and housed it in an affordable, compact, case. Theversatile instrument could be used for any kind of sound, from deep bass, tospaced out efx, to blistering synth leads. Wired Magazine called the Minimoog themost famous synth in history. One of these original instruments can cost closeto 8000 US dollars (173,648 CZK) now because of how popular they are.

Note: Asi vás napadne, že note by mohla být nota. Anemýlíte se. Ale je to také poznámka nebo poznamenat. V článku je věta „It’sinteresting to note that the only patent Moog had was for the ladder filter“,tedy „Je zajímavé, že ten jediný patent, který Moog měl, se týkal žebříkového filtru.“.
Ladder: Znamená prostě a obyčejně žebřík. Tentounikátní filtr a jeho konstrukce je základem pro zvuk Moogových syntezátorů.Doporučuji na YouTube tento výraz vyhledat, je k tomu řada pěkných videí.
Public domain: Public je veřejný a domain známe z internetučesky jako doménu. Jako spojení pak označuje dílo, které není chráněnoautorskými právy, je tedy veřejně dostupné k užití.
Flourish: Protože možná znáte slovo flower, tedykytka, pak vám bude jasné, že flourish znamená vzkvétat.
Debut: Známe i z češtiny. Debut. V angličtině čtemedebjů a označuje, kromě uvedení do společnosti, v běžné řeči častější prostéuvedení, třeba na trh.
Versatile: Vlastně asi nemusím překládat, protože vnaší zemi vznikl výrobek firmy Koh-i-noor, který se jmenoval verzatilka. Šlo otužku umožňující výměnu tuhy. Na trhu debutoval :-) roku 1950. A název„versatil“ byl odvozen ze slova versatilní, tedy variabilní, přizpůsobivý.
